Fur in Austria

Since 2005, when a nationwide animal protection law came into force, fur farms have been banned in Austria. The production of fur is one side, the trade in it the other. Even if there are no more fur farms in Austria, fur is still sold and processed. Fur industry puts the amount of processed fur exports at € 7.3 million for 2017[1]. This means that it can be assumed that at least a third of this value is imported as fur, because the fur of the 60,000 foxes[2] allegedly shot by Austrian hunters does not necessarily matter.

What Fur really means

We all know that the Stone Age people ate meat and that is why they have become as smart as we are today, so smart that we destroy everything we can find. Very impressive. But that’s only half the story, because the Stone Age people, who were supposed to be our role models in everything, also wore fur. Of course, because organic cotton and hemp fibers did not exist yet. So, you had no other choice. But how did the human female get her fur, because we are so well informed that we know that only the human males hunted while the human females sat at home waiting for the big, strong males to return from their forays. Just as it corresponds to the biologically prescribed roles. Males as hunters – this is how they stalk each other on the supermarket shelf today, at the risk of their lives to get hold of the styrofoam pack and using all their strength to drag them home while the females sit in the safe den and wait for the prey. But we digress, it’s about the fur.

Misdirected Indignation

Millions of minks are now gassed in Denmark and the Netherlands. The reason is a variant of the Covid-19 virus, which was discovered in animals and can be transmitted to humans. Sensational reports are inevitable and adorn the front pages of several newspapers. People read it and find it terrible. “What is being done there with the poor animals”, I hear, “It’s so cruel to kill them all now.” Precisely that it is not said when they had such a beautiful life. A pointless death.
