Suffering is inherent in the System

It’s that time again. The VGT is anonymously provided with recordings from a slaughterhouse, which shows the brutality and contempt with which people treat feeling, suffering creatures. This case is about chickens, but in the end, it probably doesn’t matter which species it’s about or which slaughterhouse the pictures come from, in all of them our fellow creatures are treated cruelly. Now and then people take heart and want such recordings to reach the public. The consequences are as banal as they are predictable.

Abuse of Justice

Now you are lying warm and cozy on the straw, have enough space and can go out into the pasture. A few days ago, it was quite different. You lived in a very small space on dirty slatted floors with many other fellow sufferers. Your wounds, which were caused by the sharp crevices, but also by your peers who nibbled at you because you were one of the weaker ones and they were simply boring, so completely without distraction and employment opportunities. Pigs spend most of their time happily exploring their surroundings. But in these shitholes? One step forward, one step back. That was all you could do, constantly exposed to the toxic ammonia fumes of your own excrement, which collected under the cracks in the floor and was never removed, at least for the few months you were allowed to live. You were also totally filthy, but that could be washed off, only the wounds that your body bears still bear witness to this difficult time. Finally, the barn was closed, and you came here to live the rest of your life in peace and quiet. I called you Fridolin.

Liberate Animals – Decriminalize Activists

Four young, ambitious people who had made it their task not only not to ignore the suffering that is being done to our non-human fellow creatures everywhere at any time, but also to document it and bring it to the public. What they revealed was as frightening as it was sobering. The crime scene was the Excelsior Hog Farm in Abbotsford BC, Canada, but it could have been any other pigsty in the so-called livestock industry, which Canada is generally considered to be quite advanced. What these recordings showed was not only that these animals were tortured in crates when they had young and then further on fully slatted floors, with the well-known injuries, cuts and growths. We’ve almost gotten used to that in Austria, after more than three years of campaign work by the VGT against fully slatted floors. In addition, animals that could not even walk were seen unable to get up, so they slowly died while the still alive, mobile conspecifics ate up the already dead ones that were simply left lying between them. They rotted in the stable. Some were thrown in the trash cans. All this is nothing new for those who have already dealt with the matter. Still, it gets worse.

Because it has always been like this

We visited a small farm shop near us where the pieces of dead pigs are sold from their own farm. Regional delicacies from animal welfare are offered here, so it is advertised. When you walk in, you see a screen above the counter, where the processed corpses are for sale, on which images run continuously. It shows the yard, the buildings and the shop, the family that runs the yard and the shop. What is particularly eye-catching are two photos in which you can see children playing with a piglet in the straw. What a lying world, because this one little piglet saw the daylight and straw exactly once in his life, namely when the picture was taken. Then it was set back to the others, on the full slatted floor and next to the mom in the crate.

The Right to destroy the World

„I won’t let my right to meat be taken away!“ He says, arms crossed over his chest and snorting with anger, as if I had ever intended to take anything from him. All I did, and I frankly confess, was to explain to him the disadvantages of a lifestyle that consumed animal products.
„I will not let my right to meat be taken away!“ Is the reply, a second time, now clarified by the addition, „Certainly not from you fascist vegans. You really think you’ve eaten wisdom with a spoon and now you want to stuff it into everyone. But it doesn’t work for me.” It is clear to me that there is nothing to be done. I look at him and I can’t help but think of a small child who has withdrawn into his pout and doesn’t want to listen, let alone understand.
„After all, I don’t tell you what to do,“ he adds, „you can eat your food from me, but I eat what I want. Everyone should live the way they want and respect the others.” He turns and walks. Would it have made sense to say something, anything that would have arrived?
