Live & let live

„Live and let live is my motto“
you say to me,
and I look at you
because I wonder
how to explain it to you
that I agree with you
but mean something else
than you intend.

Abuse of Justice

Now you are lying warm and cozy on the straw, have enough space and can go out into the pasture. A few days ago, it was quite different. You lived in a very small space on dirty slatted floors with many other fellow sufferers. Your wounds, which were caused by the sharp crevices, but also by your peers who nibbled at you because you were one of the weaker ones and they were simply boring, so completely without distraction and employment opportunities. Pigs spend most of their time happily exploring their surroundings. But in these shitholes? One step forward, one step back. That was all you could do, constantly exposed to the toxic ammonia fumes of your own excrement, which collected under the cracks in the floor and was never removed, at least for the few months you were allowed to live. You were also totally filthy, but that could be washed off, only the wounds that your body bears still bear witness to this difficult time. Finally, the barn was closed, and you came here to live the rest of your life in peace and quiet. I called you Fridolin.

The orphaned Calf

Milk is healthy and good for you. Milk strengthens the bones and is even supposed to make you smart, as the NÖM advertising suggests. We’ve been told this old wives‘ tale since the 1960s and we believe it. This is accompanied by scenarios of happy cows in the pasture, calves happily jumping around and the whole rural idyll that advertising likes to suggest to us. If the animals are doing so well anyway and this wonderful white drink is so good for us, why should we not? Milk might still work, but cheese is so terribly good. Some people can never do without it, as they think.

How Consumers are deceived

Consumers want to know – it is said again and again – how the animals they eat and whose products they consume are doing. The majority of people oppose factory farming and keep emphasizing that it is okay to slaughter animals and exploit their products as long as they have lived well. Whatever a good life means, the question naturally arises, how do you look at a product in the supermarket and see how the animal lived. The cheapest meat lies next to the expensive meat and just looks the same. You neither hear the screams, nor see the injuries, nor recognize the pain. Everything neatly packaged and set up in a user-friendly manner. It’s interchangeable. How can you explain the difference as briefly and concisely as possible to people who want to shop in a reflective way? After all, you can’t add essays because people don’t have time. It should be clear at first glance what is being bought.

Knowledge is irreverisble (1)

Rebekka was only called rebel by her friends with respect and her enemies with envy. And she was, a rebel. After all, that was her job, or at least that’s how she saw it. At the age of 16 you had to rebel, to lead the adults, so-called authorities and superiors, dignitaries and office holders over the edges of their well-tempered attitudes encrustations, to question what seems unquestionable, to disavow what seems irrefutable and ridiculous to do what is so firmly cemented in the minds of value nostalgia. When else should she do it? At 26, when, busy with work and family, she would always have to fear that she would scorn someone who could make life difficult for her. No, it had to be now, at 16, without dependencies and obligations, without being at the mercy of the goodwill of others. It tried itself in insurrection, civil disobedience and passive resistance.

The Absolute Truth

Lately I have been increasingly suspecting that more and more people tend to use a few scraps of information to form their truth, which is then absolute. I had to feel it on my own body when I went for a walk with the dogs in the forest a few days ago. For more than ten years now, we have been using the paths to enjoy nature, to breathe deeply, to switch off. A peaceful piece of earth that is not even 100 m away from my house.

Happy Pigs in Austria

Isn’t it wonderful to see how the pigs, big and small, gallop across the meadow, visit the cow, chat with her. We know it from the yes-of-course piglet. It’s a delight and pigs, especially the little ones, are so cute too. We know the pictures from advertising, and if you search long enough, from reality too. They actually do exist, the pigs, the sweet pink ones, who by now everyone knows that they are intelligent like three-year-old children and are therefore far superior to our domestic dogs. They play and dig and enjoy life. They build nests for the babies and experienced old sows support the young, inexperienced in rearing. And they have a separate area in which they relieve themselves. So much for the idyll. So much for the illusion. Not quite. For 1,500 pigs in Austria this idyll is actually a reality. For 1,500 out of 3,000,000. So it’s 0.05%.

Tell The Truth Day

What if we all suddenly told the truth, although I am well aware of the problem of the term „truth“. But telling a friend alone that you find the hairstyle she got heinous takes a lot of courage. You could still say, of course. „You’re a beautiful woman. Even this hairstyle cannot harm you.” How this is appreciated depends, among other things, on how exactly the girlfriend listened. Still, is that the truth? Certainly not a general opinion, but nothing more than a subjective opinion. From this it can be seen that we are not interested in the great, high truth, but rather the subjective opinions of our social environment. More than that, we depend on this goodwill because we don’t want to be spinners or polluters. That is why we do a lot of things that we do not know the meaning or benefits of, but only the insight that we do it. This abstruse, widespread and yet unbelievable man. In order to be part of it, we are even willing to make sacrifices, such as spending money on things that you would not be able to buy, you would choose yourself or risk your health. This discrepancy becomes most obvious when one puts in the possibility of reducing the suffering in the world.

The Future is vegan (1): Three Stages of Truth

In the middle of the night, somewhere in Holland. The door of an animal rights activist is broken open, mind the executive, and she is arrested and her car is confiscated. The reason, the police had such a feeling. No reason, no suspicions.

Change of scene to beautiful Austria. During a hunting observation, mind you from a public forest path and outside the actual hunting area, an activist is knocked down, choked and robbed by his camera. The judge said that this activist was only acting and the attackers were acquitted.

Also in Austria, an activist receives threatening letters from hunters who think they have a shot load left for him and that they will set fire to his house. Normally, this would have been a threat to the public. Since it is an animal rights activist, there seems to be no need for action.

Where Economy speaks, Truth must be silent

It was a big celebration – and so it was planned. Because when the NÖM celebrates 120 years, then not only everything is brought to entertainment, which is possible, but also unpleasant back votes just muzzled. And that is quite possible in Austria, even in public spaces. But wait, is a public space rented by a company still public space? Obviously not, because it was forbidden to distribute flyers throughout the area.

White milk stains, glued to the floor, either naked or 120 years old, marked this area, where freedom of expression, by the way, a human right and constitution, was suspended for the day, because within this area activists were allowed inside with information material, which would have pointed out the beautiful lying building around the so highly praised udder secretion, not be distributed. After animal rights activists focus on sharing information in an area where fairytale and healing world stories are still sold as the truth. Weiterlesen
